Best Department Stores and Shopping Malls in Seoul: Which One Should You Visit?

Seoul has too many excellent malls to visit all of them. The useful question is not which one is “best,” but which one solves your shopping list with the least travel. We use Shinsegae Gangnam for concentrated luxury and food, The Hyundai Seoul for contemporary retail, Lotte World Mall for families, COEX for weatherproof convenience, Galleria for the Apgujeong luxury axis and Myeongdong’s major stores for central sightseeing days.
Most department stores close on an occasional scheduled day and individual boutiques may keep shorter hours than the building. Check the branch’s official directory on the morning of your visit, especially around Korean public holidays.
Choose by Purpose
- Shinsegae Gangnam Best for luxury, beauty, food and a major transport hub.
- The Hyundai Seoul Best for contemporary Korean fashion, pop-ups and design-led interiors.
- Lotte World Mall and Avenuel Best for families and an all-day Jamsil itinerary.
- COEX and Hyundai Trade Center Best for rain, conventions and an entirely indoor route.
- Galleria Luxury Hall Best for focused luxury shopping around Apgujeong Rodeo.
- Myeongdong department stores Best for combining shopping with central Seoul sightseeing.

Time-saving rule: Pick one mall that matches your main purpose. Two adjacent properties are a plan; three districts are a commute.
Shinsegae Gangnam: The All-Round Powerhouse
Connected to Express Bus Terminal, Shinsegae Gangnam combines luxury boutiques, beauty, fashion and a strong food hall. Goto Mall sits below the same transport complex, making high-low shopping possible without changing stations.

- 📍 Google Maps: Shinsegae Gangnam
- 🚇 Best by public transport: Lines 3, 7 or 9 to Express Bus Terminal Station.
- 🚕 Taxi: Useful with luggage, but road congestion can be severe.
- 🚗 Car: Subway is easier on weekends.
The Hyundai Seoul: Fashion, Pop-Ups and Crowds
The Hyundai Seoul is strongest for contemporary fashion, lifestyle, food and large-scale pop-ups. The open interior makes it pleasant, but weekend crowds can turn circulation into a slow exhibition of other people’s shoulders.

- 📍 Google Maps: The Hyundai Seoul
- 🚇 Best by public transport: Lines 5 or 9 to Yeouido Station; use the underground connection.
- 🚕 Taxi: Reasonable outside rush hour.
- 🚗 Car: Public transport is recommended during major pop-ups.
Crowd tip: Visit near opening on a weekday and confirm pop-up reservation rules before travelling.
Lotte World Mall and Avenuel: Best for Families
Jamsil’s mall complex combines mainstream retail, luxury, dining, cinema and family attractions. It is the easiest choice when one person wants to shop and another wants an aquarium or observation deck.

- 📍 Google Maps: Lotte World Mall
- 🚇 Best by public transport: Lines 2 or 8 to Jamsil Station.
- 🚕 Taxi: Helpful with children or several bags.
- 🚗 Car: Possible, but weekend parking can be slow.
COEX and Hyundai Trade Center: The Weatherproof Route
COEX joins shopping, restaurants, Starfield Library and indoor attractions, with Hyundai Department Store Trade Center connected nearby. It is practical during monsoon rain, winter cold or a convention visit. It is less useful if your goal is charming street retail.

- 📍 Google Maps: COEX Mall
- 🚇 Best by public transport: Line 2 to Samseong Station or Line 9 to Bongeunsa Station.
- 🚕 Taxi: Avoid around major events and rush hour.
- 🚗 Car: Use public transport when the convention calendar is busy.
Galleria: Focused Luxury in Apgujeong
Galleria Luxury Hall remains one of Seoul’s clearest luxury addresses. Its advantage is location: after checking department-store boutiques, you can continue to Apgujeong Rodeo, Dosan Park and Cheongdam.

- 📍 Google Maps: Galleria Luxury Hall
- 🚇 Best by public transport: Suin-Bundang Line to Apgujeong Rodeo Station.
- 🚕 Taxi: Useful for continuing to Cheongdam with purchases.
- 🚗 Car: Public transport is easier for a multi-stop route.
Myeongdong: Lotte and Shinsegae for a Central Day
Lotte’s Myeongdong complex and Shinsegae’s main-store area work when shopping shares the day with Namdaemun, Myeongdong or N Seoul Tower. Expect beauty, fashion, luxury and duty-free options, but distinguish ordinary department-store purchase, tax refund and duty-free pickup rules.

Refund check: Ask whether the purchase is ordinary retail with tax refund, immediate refund or duty-free. The words sound similar but the process is not.
Food, Tax Refunds and What We Would Skip
Basement food halls are excellent for browsing but seating can be scarce. Restaurant floors are better for a planned meal. Bring your passport for eligible tax-refund purchases and ask whether processing happens at the brand counter or a central desk.

We would skip travelling across Seoul for a mall that duplicates the one beside your hotel, and we would not assume every branch carries the same brand or stock. Check the official directory on the day.
Everything above was checked on foot by Korea Tripbook editors, most recently August 2026. Store directories, closing days, pop-ups and facilities can change.
