Olive Young Shopping Guide: What to Buy, Best Categories & Tax Refund Tips

Olive Young is Korea’s easiest K-beauty starting point, but it is not a magical building where every bestseller suits every face. The useful part is comparison: you can test textures, see category rankings and place inexpensive Korean brands beside global ones in a single visit.
We shop the store in a fixed order so the basket does not make decisions on our behalf.
Plan thirty to sixty minutes for a normal visit. Large flagship branches can absorb much longer, but the extra time often goes into crowds and duplicate shelves rather than better decisions.
The Five-Pass Olive Young Strategy
- Set one goal Choose sunscreen, lip colour, calming care or another single priority before entering.
- Test texture and shade Use testers where available, then check the result in daylight.
- Compare unit prices A bundle is only a deal if you will use both products before expiry.
- Read the active ingredients Avoid stacking several exfoliants or retinoids in one haul.
- Confirm refund and baggage details Present your passport when required and keep liquids within airline rules.

Basket rule: Put a product in your basket only after you can explain what it replaces or adds to your current routine.
Sunscreen, Cleansing and Barrier Care
Sunscreen is the category where in-person texture testing pays off. Compare finish, fragrance, eye sting risk and how the formula sits under makeup. Cleansing oils and balms are useful for heavy sunscreen or makeup, while gentle cleansers and barrier creams suit travellers whose skin is already stressed by flights and weather.

Do not assume a Korean SPF label removes the need to reapply. Also check whether a product sold in Korea has the same formula as a similarly named product at home.
Lip Products and Makeup
Korean lip tints, cushion foundations, brow products and compact palettes are easy to test and pack. Lip shades can oxidise or stain differently after ten minutes, so swatch, walk around, then decide. Cushion shades may have a narrower range than visitors expect.

Shade check: Store lighting is flattering and not legally binding. Check foundation and lip colour near a window before paying.
Masks, Patches and Beauty Tools
Sheet masks are convenient gifts, hydrocolloid patches are genuinely useful, and compact tools can be good value. Buy masks by skin need rather than package colour. For tools, inspect material, replacement parts and whether the shape actually suits your routine.

Large multipacks save money only when you know you like the product. Start with one or two units; return later if they work.
Haircare, Body Care and Wellness
Hair treatments, scalp care, hand cream and body products are less famous than lip tints but often more useful. Fragrance can be strong, so open a tester where permitted rather than trusting the package description. Supplements require extra caution: check ingredients, dosage and your destination country’s import rules.

Health check: Do not treat a store ranking as medical advice. Check interactions and local import restrictions before buying supplements.
Which Branch Should You Visit?
Large tourist-area branches provide broader selection and easier language support but also attract crowds. Myeongdong is convenient for a first visit; branches in residential or business districts can be calmer. Stock and operating hours vary, so use Olive Young’s official store finder on the day.

- 📍 Google Maps: Olive Young Myeongdong search
- 🚇 Best by public transport: Line 4 to Myeongdong Station; walk through the central shopping streets.
- 🚕 Taxi: Unnecessary unless travelling with heavy luggage.
- 🚗 Car: Not recommended in Myeongdong; use the subway.
Promotions, Payment and Tax Refund
Shelf tags may show a regular price, current price and bundle terms. Compare the final unit price rather than the size of the red number. International cards are commonly accepted, but carry a second card. Decline dynamic currency conversion unless you have checked the markup.
Eligible tourists can use immediate tax refund at participating stores when the transaction meets current rules. Korea’s official guidance says immediate refund generally requires a qualifying purchase, passport presentation and spending within system limits; policies can change, so ask before the cashier completes payment.

What We Would Skip
We would skip duplicate active ingredients, giant bundles of an untested product, foundation bought without a shade check, heavy liquids available at home and anything chosen solely from a “viral” shelf. One excellent sunscreen and one lip product beat a basket of future bathroom clutter.
Bring a small list with your current products and ingredients. If you cannot tell whether a new serum duplicates something you already use, take a photo and decide later. Many products on the Korean shelf are also available through Olive Young Global, giving you a useful price and availability comparison before sacrificing luggage weight.

Everything above was checked on foot by Korea Tripbook editors, most recently August 2026. Products, promotions, branch hours and tax-refund participation can change.
